Friendship Festival draws more than 170,000
YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan -- A fireworks display capped off the 2009 Japanese-American Friendship Festival Aug 22-23. More than 170,000 people attended the event designed to bolster the bi-lateral relationship shared by the United States and Japan. YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan -- The Yokota Samurai and Hachioji Jinba Daiko drummers entertain festival goers Aug 22 during the first day of the two-day Japanese-American Friendship Festival Aug. 22. KANEOHE BAY, Hawaii -- The Black Eyed Peas perform hit songs Aug. 15 during BayFest 2009 here The show, which attracted 15,000 Marines, Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors, Coastguardsmen, and local residents and tourists, was sold out three weeks prior. Lauded as "the biggest entertainment event in Hawaii," BayFest is an annual event featuring rides, games, fireworks, and live music organized by Marine Corps Community Services. Emperor Akihito, Emperor of Japan, lays a chrysanthemum wreath at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl Crater, Hawaii, July 15. Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko paid tribute to those interred at the cemetery in a ceremony attended by Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle, Navy Adm. Timothy Keating, U.S. Pacific Command commander and Pacific Air Forces commander, Gen. Howie Chandler. The ceremony also included a 21-gun salute, a joint flyover by U.S. Navy and Japan Self Defense Forces aircraft and the playing of "Taps."
