MAUI, Hawaii -- Brig. Gen. Anthony Mastalir, U.S. Space Forces Indo-Pacific commander, met with lineal descendants of King Kamehameha Feb. 10, atop Haleakala, Hawaii.

Mastalir explained that deliberate actions are underway following a fuel spill at the site and heard their inputs regarding the remediation efforts.

"We share a common interest in cleaning up the spill as quickly as possible, and the appreciation and responsibility for Haleakala is being taken seriously," Mastalir said.

The 10,023-foot mountain is a sacred and important place to native Hawaiians, and the military is working with native Hawaiian and other organizations to ensure cultural considerations are incorporated into the cleanup plan.
