513th Expeditionary RED HORSE civil engineers innovate airfield runway construction, save $7.4 million

U.S. Air Force Airmen with the 513th Expeditionary RED HORSE Squadron Horizontal Construction Team operate a grader over a milled section of soil on Northwest Field, Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, April 24, 2024. The team conducted excavation tests at Northwest Field using a pavement milling machine to find an alternative excavation technique better fit for removing the region’s hard-packed soil, made mostly of coral and limestone, in preparation for airfield runway construction in the Pacific.
