U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. David Nahom (fourth from right), commander, Alaskan NORAD Region (ANR), Alaskan Command (ALCOM) and Eleventh Air Force, and a team of Airmen from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson gather for a photo in front of the historic “Gateway to the Arctic” at the U.S.’ northernmost city of Utqiagvik, Alaska, Feb. 4, 2023. While little is known about the landmark, sources date the display back as far as the end of the 19th century. The bowhead whale jaw bones, embedded in a gray pebbled beach alongside the shell of a traditional whaling boat, are said to symbolize Utqiagvik’s relationship to the sea and whaling. The Airmen visited Utqiagvik for a site visit of Point Barrow Long Range Radar Site, as well as to engage with the whaling community of Utqiagvik, whose welcoming and continued support of the military makes the Point Barrow mission possible.
