A wooden ladder connects the upper and lower levels of a traditional ice cellar in Utqiagvik, Alaska, Feb. 4, 2023. The ice cellar, maintained by Lewis Brower, whaling captain and lifelong Barrow resident, and his family and generations of whaling captains before them, is capable of handling two full whales between 32 and 38 feet long. Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Airmen visited the cellar during a visit of Point Barrow Long Range Radar Site and to participate in Kivgiq, an ancient Iñupiaq tradition, which unites North Slope communities in a celebration of dance and fellowship.
