Japanese Self Defense Forces and U.S. military members recently gathered together on the tarmac at Sendai Airport, Japan. U.S. Airmen, Soldiers, Marines and Sailors rolled up their sleeves with their Japanese counterparts to clear debris from the runway and surrounding areas of the airport after the March 11, 2011 tsunami in order to begin relief aircraft operations. Sendai became a major hub for delivery of relief supplies to the affected areas. The Sendai airport is scheduled to reopen for civilian commercial flights on April 12, 2011.
