U.S. Air Force Brig Gen Carla Riner, Air National Guard advisor to the Pacific Air Forces Director of Air and Cyberspace Operations, poses with Zahrul Irham (left) who received surgery on Hospital Ship Mercy in 2004 during the Operation Unified Assistance, at the Aceh Tsunami Museum exhibit opening ceremony in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, Nov. 10, 2024. The Mercy provided medical and surgical capabilities to assist during the early stages of the recovery phase. In total, the Mercy treated some 20,000 patients affected by the tsunami. Indonesia: DoD, USAID, and UN staff attend Tsunami Remembrance Event
U.S. Air Force Brig Gen Carla Riner, Air National Guard advisor to the Pacific Air Forces Director of Air and Cyberspace Operations, tours the new exhibit honoring U.S. support in disaster relief with the Acting Governor of Aceh Province and the USAID-Jakarta Mission Director at the Aceh Tsunami Museum opening ceremony in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, Nov. 10, 2024. The Indonesian Government requested international disaster relief within 24 hours of the tsunami hitting Banda Aceh. U.S. Indo-Pacific Command responded immediately by initiating Operation Unified Assistance. The operation last over 3 months and saved thousands of lives. The U.S.-Indonesian comprehensive strategic partnership continues to grow today. With over 220 collaborative events annually, the U.S. remains committed to supporting Indonesia and all partnered countries, in military and humanitarian efforts with the goal of ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific. Indonesia: DoD, USAID, and UN staff attend Tsunami Remembrance Event
U.S. Air Force Brig Gen Carla Riner, Air National Guard advisor to the Pacific Air Forces Director of Air and Cyberspace Operations, cuts a ribbon alongside the U.S. delegation at the Aceh Tsunami Museum exhibit opening ceremony in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, Nov. 10, 2024. A 9.0 magnitude earthquake in the Indian Ocean caused a tsunami that destroyed multiple cities in Aceh Province, killing more than 100,000 people on Dec. 26, 2004. In response, U.S. Indo-Pacific Command executed Operation Unified Assistance which involved the deployment of 16,000 personnel, 26 ships, 58 helicopters, and 43 fixed-wing aircraft to deliver 18 million pounds of relief supplies, 400,000 gallons of fresh water, ferrying 8,000 people to safety, and providing direct medical treatment to over 20,000 people.
