A representative from each squadron at Kunsan Air Base, Korea, came out to participate in the Marine Corps Combat Fitness Test there July 1. The event was meant to prepare Airmen to be able to monitor the exercises and to motivate them for a related, larger event planned for later.

The purpose of the CFT is to assess a Marine's physical capacity in a broad spectrum of combat related tasks. The CFT was specifically designed to evaluate strength, stamina, agility and coordination as well as overall anaerobic capacity. The CFT is a complement to the Physical Fitness Test and measures the functional elements of combat fitness through execution of a series of events that represent every Marine's combat experience.

The test consists of the "movement to contact" section (an 880-yard run; an "ammunition lift," which is a repetitive lift of a 30-pound ammunition can from shoulder height to overhead), and the "maneuver under fire "course (a 300-yard shuttle run that includes a variety of combat-related tasks, including crawls, buddy drags and carries, ammunition resupply, grenade throw and agility running).
