JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska -- The Lead, Develop, Care leadership workshop took place July 25 through 28, 2023, at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, in order to equip non-commissioned officers, company grade officers, and civilians to be better leaders in the Air Force.
As part of the Air and Space Force Association, the General Jimmy Doolittle Leadership Center worked with executive leadership coach and author Terry Cook to develop this workshop.
“There’s a hunger among leaders for helpful, practical approaches to leadership, particularly now that we’re striving to succeed in Agile Combat Employment, mission command, and build multi-capable Airmen,” said Dr. Patrick Donley, a retired U.S. Air Force colonel, director with the Doolittle Leadership Center, and workshop speaker. “We need to give them the tools to succeed.”
The LDC Model removes the mystery from leadership by providing a guide to assist leaders make sense of all the components, principles, and tools in their leadership. During the workshop, JBER NCOs, officers, and civilians spent time learning about leadership and applying what they learned in exercises.
“The Lead-Develop-Care seminar has been an excellent chance to expand my capabilities as an Airman leader,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Isaac Yunevich, the 673rd Healthcare Operations Squadron non-commissioned officer in charge of the Developmental and Behavioral Family Readiness Center. “The seminar had a clear definition of the three principles and supporting aspects. Using the tools provided, I now feel equipped to address the challenges of my unit and the difficulties with Airmen I supervise.”
After JBER, speakers Cook and Donley will travel to other bases, including Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada; Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado; and Kunsan Air Base, South Korea.
“Good leadership doesn’t just happen,” said Cook. “It’s not by accident. It requires forethought and planning”.
