Colonel NATHAN T. COLUNGA

Colonel Nathan T. Colunga serves as the Deputy Commander for Fifth Air Force, Yokota Air Base, Japan. Fifth Air Force includes 15,000 Airmen across three main operating bases delivering combat-ready air superiority, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, rapid mobility, strike, personnel recovery and command and control forces to defend Japan and the U.S. homeland forward, deter aggression, respond to contingencies, and if required, prevail in conflict. In close partnership with the Japan Self-Defense Force, U.S. Forces Japan, and service components, Fifth Air Force enhances bilateral interoperability and readiness through persistent joint planning, exercises, and engagements.

Colonel Colunga received his commission through ROTC in 2000 after graduation from the University of Texas at Austin. Since completion of navigator training in 2001, he has flown more than 3,300 hours and is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Weapons School. Colonel Colunga commanded special operations forces from the squadron through the wing level both in garrison and in combat, and executed deployments in support of operations in U.S. Central Command and U.S. Africa Command areas of responsibility.

His staff assignments include time in the Joint Staff Directorate for Force Structure, Resources, and Assessment, J8 and the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Policy Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict (SO/LIC), Pentagon, Washington, D.C. Prior to his current assignment he served as the Senior Military Assistant to the Under Secretary of the Air Force, the Pentagon, Arlington, Virginia. Colonel Colunga is married and has two children.
