Eielson youths become Iron Chefs

EIELSON AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska -- Could the youngest members of Eielson become the next Iron Chef? Eielson youth think so.

The Youth Center will be conducting Iron Chefs cooking every Tuesday at 1 p.m. starting July 17.

Kids ages 9 and up are invited to create their own gourmet food. The youth center will provide the base ingredients, like cookie dough or rice, and a wide assortment of additional ingredients. From there the children are free to create anything they can imagine.

The staff had been kicking the idea around for sometime, when several children disagreed with the choice of cookie they were going to make.

"From there, we just kind of decided to try it," stated Debbie Conklin, youth center director.

The first week was just a trial run. "The kids loved it," said Stephanie Cox of the Youth Center. "They were so excited."

July 22 will be the real deal: "Iron Chef, Y.C. Edition." The menu will be pancakes with a wide assortment of toppings and fillings.
