PACAF honors Air Force hero of Pearl Harbor attack

Jerry Browning, grandson of retired Lt. Gen. Gordon Aylesworth Blake, and Chief Master Sgt. David Wolfe, Pacific Air Forces command chief, share a moment after the memorial display unveiling ceremony on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, Dec. 7, 2023. Blake was a base operations officer on Hickam Field during the attacks on Hickam field on Dec. 7, 1941, and is remembered for heroism in directing B-17 Flying Fortresses to safety while under attack from Japanese fighter jets. Blake is also remembered for serving as the PACAF vice commander in chief, the commander of Continental Air Command, and the director of the National Security Agency in his storied career.
