Then-Senior Master Sgt. Paul Koester snaps a shot of rescue operations at the base of the twin towers Sept. 11, 2001. Koester and fellow guardsmen reported to Ground Zero soon after the towers were attacked. Koester was a guardsman at the time with the 102nd Rescue Squadron at Gabresky Air National Guard Base in Long Island, N.Y., just 64 miles from the twin towers. Koester and his teammates found the last live survivor in the rubble and carried her in a Stokes litter through the debris to safety. Now-Chief Master Sgt. Paul Koester is currently the oldest Airman serving on active-duty. Koester is the Pararescue Functional Manager for the Battlefield Airmen Branch at Pacific Air Forces Headquarters, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. (U.S. Air Force photo/Chief Master Sgt.
