An F-22 Raptor takes off from Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, while Mount Redoubt spews steam into the morning sky. Mount Redoubt, which is 100 miles southwest of the base, has been active for months, and is keeping emergency managers and early warning personnel on the edge of their seats with periodic eruptions and discharges of steam. So far, only a small amount of volcanic ash has fallen on Elmendorf. The F-22 Raptor belongs to the 525nd Fighter Squadron and flown by an Arctic Reservist from the 477th Fighter Group.
