060513-F-2034C-005 Tech. Sgt. Darrell Hankins, Staff Sgt. John Kukan and Senior Airman Greg Lacy perform during the 10th Annual Twilight Tattoo May 13, 2006 at Fort De Russy, Hawaii. The three band members are from the Air Force Band of the Pacific. The annual event features bands from the Army, Navy, Marines and the Air Force. Like many other military traditions, the origins of the Tattoo can trace its roots to Europe. After a hard days work soldiers would go to town and frequent their favorite drinking establishments. When it was time to return to the garrison for the evening, a drummer would enter each establishment and sound the appropriate drum cadence to signal the time to finish their drink and return to the barracks. The soldiers would follow the drummer from each establishment to the next. Eventually the drummer was replaced or joined by a bagpiper and the evening ritual became a formal military function. The Tattoo ceremony has evolved through the years to become an extensive and grandiose spectacle for the public and military. (U.S. Air Force photo by Tech. Sgt. Shane A. Cuomo)
