HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PACAF! Headquarters Far East Air Forces completed its move to Hickam AFB and redesignated as Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) on July 1, 1957. Colonel Joseph B. Stanley, Jr., 6486th Air Base Wing commander, acted as commander of Troops as units of the air base wing and tenant organizations participated in a formal parade that preceded the PACAF assumption of command ceremony. The ceremony took place at the Hickam flag pole, and included a fly-by of jet aircraft and review of troops. Officials also held a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony in front of the newly reconstructed entrance to Hale Makai (Building 1102). Colonel Stanley. Jr., formally welcomed General Laurence S. Kuter, CINCPACAF, and turned over to him the building for occupancy by HQ PACAF. (For more information click on Heritage to Horizons, then This Week in History, then July 2007.)
