REPUBLIC OF NAURU – A local man watches a C-17 Globemaster III from McChord Air Force Base, Wash. land here July 27. The aircraft, piloted by a crew from the 728th Airlift Squadron, picked up a 12-person U.S. Pacific Command team deployed to provide training and assistance to the island's physicians and caregivers. This was the first time a substantial U.S. military presence has been in Nauru since World War II. The island is surrounded by a thick reef, precluding ships from docking, and its airport has a relatively short runway. The C-17's unique ability to land on short runways made this mission possible.
