HICKAM AIR FORCE BASE, Hawaii - Shad Kane, a cultural practitioner with the Oahu Council of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, chants an oli, or a blessings at the Haleamau Halealoha burial site on Hickam Nov. 14 following the 7th Annual Kapuaikaula (Hickam) Makahiki (Thanksgiving) festival. Local Hawaiian and Hickam officials gathered at Hickam Harbor on Nov. 14 for the Makahiki festival. The festival involved a ceremonial arrival in canoes, spiritual offerings, five skills competitions and a feast to end the day. According to history texts, the Makahiki was started to honor Lono, the Hawaiian guardian of agriculture, rain, health and peace. The offerings to Lono during the Makahiki were taken to the burial site. (DoD photo by U.S. Air Force Tech Sgt. Cohen A. Young)
