Scott’s Hut and a cross monument sit near McMurdo Station, Antarctica Nov. 26. Scott’s Hut was erected in 1911 by the British Antarctic Expedition of 1910-1913 led by Robert Falcon Scott. The cross is a historic monument commemorating T. Vince of the British Antarctic Expedition of 1901-1904 who lost his life in the vicinity in March 1902. The hut and monument are preserved by the freezing temperatures and dry climate of Antarctica. McMurdo Station is the largest community in Antarctica and a science research center operated by the United States through the U.S. Antarctic Program, a branch of the National Science Foundation. The 13th Air Force-led Joint Task Force Support Forces Antarctica, Operation Deep Freeze, provides operational and logistics support to the National Science Foundation and U.S. Antarctic Program. The operation began in 1955. (U.S. Air Force photo/Tech. Sgt. Shane A. Cuomo)
