Visiting the monument

Standing in front of the Marine Corps monument on Wake Island is Mr. John Dale, a former defender during the battle for Wake Island Dec. 8 – 23, 1941. Mr. Dale, then U.S. Marine Corporal Dale was captured during the surrender of Wake on Dec. 23, 1941. After being held for 44 months Dale was liberated by U.S. Army forces in Hokkaido Japan. Mr. Dale returned to Wake with Military Historical tours on Dec 12. (U.S. Air Force photo/Tech. Sgt. Tom Czerwinski)
