Lt. Col. Edward "Hertz" Vaughan is the commander of the 13th Expeditionary Support Squadron and deputy commander of the 13th Air Expeditionary Group, assigned to the 13 Air Force-led Joint Task Force-Support Forces Antarctica, McMurdo Station, Antarctica. The 13th AEG and military members from the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Army, and Coast Guard are lending operational and logistical support to the National Science Foundation's research and exploration in Antarctica. This support is provided by the Joint Task Force Support Forces Antarctica, led by 13th Air Force at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. JTF SFA coordinates strategic intertheater airlift, tactical deep field support, aeromedical evacuation support, search and rescue response, sealift, seaport access, bulk fuel supply, port cargo handling, and transportation requirements.
