JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii—After the morning Rim of the Pacific update brief in the 613th Air Operations Center here, personnel from the U.S. Navy’s 3rd Fleet’s Reserve Maritime Air Operations and the Royal Canadian Air Force discuss items remaining on the schedule of events for RIMPAC, July 24, 2012. For the first time ever during the RIMPAC series, the 613th AOC is being lead by non-U.S. personnel and primarily manned by non-United States Air Force staff from June 29 through Aug. 3. Royal Canadian Air Force Brig. Gen. Michael Hood, RIMPAC Combined Force Air Component Commander, is leading a team of Air Force units from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Chile, as well as the U.S. Navy’s 3rd Fleet’s Reserve Maritime Air Operations personnel, each working to ensure seamless communication among all exercise players. Twenty-two nations, more than 40 ships and submarines, and more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are participating in the RIMPAC exercise in and around the Hawaiian Islands. As the world's largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity that helps participants foster and sustain the cooperative relationships critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world's oceans. RIMPAC 2012 is the 23rd exercise in the series that began in 1971. (U.S. Air Force photo/1st Lt. AnnMarie Annicelli)
