FUSSA, Japan – Airmen from Yokota Air Base carry a portable Shinto shrine during the 59th Annual Fussa Tanabata Festival Aug. 7. The shrine, called a Mikoshi, translates as “cloud burst” in English. More than 40 Airmen carry the shrine each year during the festival, also known as the “star festival.” According to Chinese legend, the two stars Altair and Vega, usually separated from each other by the Milky Way galaxy, meet up in the night sky on the same day each year. HICKAM AIR FORCE BASE, Hawaii -- Maj. Tara Jayne, 15th Aeromedical-Dental Squadron optometrist, uses a split lamp to determine the overall health of Senior Airman Matthew Brown?s. She has spent more than eight years as an optometrist in the Air Force providing eye care and teaching people that wearing sunglasses can prevent cataracts later in life. Major Jayne, the only Air Force optometrist on Hickam, has been on five humanitarian trips to the Dominican Republic, Philippines and Thailand during her career.
