Air Force officials announced July 16 that Vietnam is scheduled to send observers to the international mobility forces' competition, the 2007 Air Mobility Command Rodeo.

The AMC Rodeo, focuses on improving worldwide air mobility forces' professional core abilities, is set for July 22 through 28 at McChord Air Force Base, Wash.

More than 2,500 people from 34 countries are expected to compete or observe.

"This is historic. It underscores the international importance of the mobility air forces," said Brig. Gen. Kip L. Self, the AMC Rodeo commander. "Mobility air forces are often on the front line, delivering lifesaving medical support, food and relief supplies to people across the globe. Through events such as Rodeo, countries not only share their expertise, but also build life-long relationships."

Ten countries plan to send teams to compete in airlift, tanker, security forces, aeromedical, aerial port and maintenance events. Competitors are from the United States, Belgium, Brazil, Germany, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Turkey and United Arab Emirates.

Vietnam joins 24 other nations sending observers including Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Botswana, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, Greece, India, Indonesia, Kuwait, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Oman, Peru, Poland, Romania, Switzerland, Tunisia, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.

Rodeo's roots began in 1962 as a combat skills competition designed to develop and improve techniques/procedures while enhancing air mobility operations, and promoting esprit de corps. In 1979, the AMC Rodeo was expanded to include international air mobility partners. Rodeo tests the flight and ground skills of aircrews as well as the related skills of security forces, aerial port operations, aeromedical evacuation, and maintenance team members. It also provides valuable joint and combined training for all participants.
