Osan gets new M-50 masks

OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea --  Osan Airmen began receiving their new M-50 protective masks, replacing the MCU 2 protective mask, during a mass re-issue process June 9. 

The M-50 mask is one of the latest initiatives in fielding "joint" equipment, according to Tech. Sgt. Peter Garcia, 51st Civil Engineer Squadron's readiness flight.

"This is a great opportunity to be on the front end of a new piece of joint equipment," he said.

The new mask offers the same level of protection against chemical, biological, and radiological threats as the MCU 2, but takes advantage of technological advancements.

"Because of the technological advancements and redesign, it is now easier for Airmen to change the filter and prevent unintentional changes to the head-harness," Sergeant Garcia said.

Additional features the M-50 offers include a wider view, easier access to the drinking tube and an additional filter.

The new mask is already receiving positive reviews from Osan Airmen.

"I like the new mask much more then the old one," said Airman 1st Class Ashley Lee, 51st Aerospace Medical Squadron. "With the old mask, the straps always got caught in my hair when I was putting it on and taking it off. With the new mask, I can just loosen the bottom straps and it's off. The fact that it's much lighter and easily attaches to my vest is also a plus."

Senior Airman Jennifer Korenek, 51st Medical Support Squadron, says the M-50 is all around, a better mask.

"It seems lighter and much easier to put on," she said. "I love how the drinking tube is adjustable and not constantly in your mouth. Also, not only is the mask better, but the mask carrier has improved greatly. It now has an extra layer on the inside to protect from sand, as well as having the attachment that connects to your vest. I am very pleased with the M-50."

With all the advancements and new features that M-50 offers, Sergeant Garcia says the one thing it will not help Airmen do is don their mask quicker than before.

"Donning is really a matter of the person, their familiarity with the mask, and how often they practice using it," he said. "This is why training and exercises are so important because they are opportunities for the Airman to sharpen their skills with the equipment they use while performing their mission."
