Airmen assigned to the 506th Expeditionary Air Refueling Squadron here volunteered their time off on Christmas Eve, helping the local Salvation Army prepare care packages for distribution to local families on Christmas Day.

"Basically, what we are doing here is taking big piles of food that were donated from people all across the island and turning them into little piles that we will box up for distribution," said Capt. Brett Duffy, a KC-135 Stratotanker pilot. "Its not something that's overly challenging, but it helps out and in the grand scheme of things  that's all that matters."

This is the third time the 506th EARS Airmen have volunteered their time with the Salvation Army during this deployment and their last community service project as the unit leaves Andersen during the last week of December..

"It's a kind of tradition we have in the 506th EARS. We like to leave every place we visit a little bit better than it was when we got here, and having opportunities like this really help out" said Captain Duffy. "A lot of these Airmen are away from their families for the holidays and this project helps to get everyone in the spirit of the holidays."

The 506th EARS was on a two-month deployment here in support of Pacific refueling operations for Andersen's global deterrence mission.
