Wolf Pack members kicked off the first exercise of 2010 early Jan. 11. The exercise, a week-long peninsula-wide operational readiness exercise, tests Kunsan's ability to fulfill the three parts of their mission ... defend the base, accept follow-on forces and take the fight north.

"At any given time, we can be called upon to defend the Republic of Korea," said Col Rob Givens, 8th Fighter Wing commander. "This exercise allows us to practice and demonstrate we are ready."

During the exercise, Wolf Pack members will focus on rendering Self Aid and Buddy Care to injured workmates, demonstrate their ability to complete the mission in simulated chemical environments and much more.

While performing these roles, Wolf Pack members will also have to contend with the snow and cold, which is normal to this region this time of year. The 8th Fighter Wing safety office advises the Pack to stay safe in the elements.

"For many Kunsan members, this is their first time participating in an exercise in this environment," said Master Sgt. Schelaundye Owens, 8 FW safety office. "People should remember to dress for the weather and dress in layers. They also need to hydrate; you can dehydrate just as quickly in the cold as you can in the heat."

Sergeant Owens also suggested that anyone walking around in chemical gear should be extra careful in the ice and snow. She said they should try to stick to the snowy parts of the sidewalks or to spots where others have walked.

"Safety is always a concern," said Colonel Givens. "We have to preserve our combat assets. For many of the Pack, this is the first time they've participated in an exercise this large and serious. However, if we look out for each other and execute like we do each day, we will have success."
