Pizzas 4 Patriots sends 'slice of home' to Wolf Pack

KUNSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea --  As the 8th Fighter Wing celebrated Independence Day with sports, a parade, a barbecue and fireworks, Airmen and their families also welcomed a "slice" of home.

Kunsan Air Base received 48 Chicago-style deep-dish pizzas from the Pizza 4 Patriots Operation World Pizza program to enjoy during Independence Day festivities July 4.

A refrigerated truck brought the deep-frozen pies to the base July 1. The pizzas were served for lunch on the club patio, amidst cardboard boat races, softball and soccer games.

"This is a great thing for Kunsan Airmen," said Duck Choi, Loring Club manager. "It is an honor to have the opportunity to be part of this program and serve this pizza."

Wolf Pack Airmen were part of the more than 200,000 uniformed American men and women deployed away from home this Independence Day.

"As we enjoy parades, picnics and fireworks, I hope we also take a moment to remember the generations of Americans who have safeguarded our independence," said Adm. Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. "I won't forget the gifts of their service far away from home or the sacrifices of the families who wait for their return."

Wolf Pack Airmen expressed their thanks and appreciation for the support they received from home as they enjoyed a "slice of home."

"This is fantastic pizza, and the program is a neat way for people overseas to be remembered during the holiday," said Capt. Paul Hoff, 8th Force Support Squadron flight commander. "I'd like to say thanks to those who sent it for keeping us in your minds, and for the pizza."

According to a U.S. Forces Korea instruction, Headquarters U.S. Forces Korea and service components received and distributed approximately 300 frozen Chicago-style deep-dish pizzas across the peninsula. The program provided USFK personnel, mainly those operating at remote locations, with an opportunity to enjoy a "slice of home," donated by Pizzas 4 Patriots to USFK in support of Operation World Pizza for the 2010 Fourth of July.
