One of the largest airshows in the Pacific officially opened today during a ceremony here March 1, 2011.

The Honorable Richard Dalla-Riva, the Australian Minister for Manufacturing, Export and Trade, served as the official opener of the Avalon 2011 Australian International Airshow and Aerospace and Defence Exposition.

Mr. Dall-Riva said the airshow comes at a time when the aviation sector plays a crucial role, citing the recent response to the earthquake in New Zealand and the Australian support with their aircraft.

"The recent tragic events in Christchurch (New Zealand) underpin the importance of having a strong aviation sector - we were able to respond quickly and effectively to this unforeseen humanitarian crisis," he said.

Airshow officials also extended their thanks to Gen. Gary North, Pacific Air Forces commander, for his attendance at the airshow. The U.S. military is participating in this year's show.

Several aircraft and equipment are on static display and performing aerial demonstrations during the airshow, including the F-22 Raptor, the F-16 Fighting Falcon, the B-1B Lancer, the KC-135 Stratotanker, the C-17 Globemaster, and the C-130J Hercules.

Through participating in air shows and other regional events, the United States demonstrates its commitment to the security of the Asia-Pacific region, promotes the standardization and interoperability of equipment, and displays capabilities critical to the success of current and future military operations.
