"Ammo" Airmen executes mission, prepare for readiness exercise Published July 14, 2011 By Senior Airman Brittany Y. Bateman 8th Fighter Wing Public Affairs KUNSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea -- Airmen from the 8th Maintenance Squadron conventional maintenance crew members at Kunsan Air Base crossload inert munitions from trailer to trailer to prepare the base and theater support package aircraft for the upcoming Operational Readiness Exercise here July 13. There are 46 permanent-party and 13 theater-support package personnel assigned to the 8th MXS conventional maintenance flight. These Airmen build and maintain various general purpose, cluster bomb units and precision guided bombs. They also inspect and assemble aircraft countermeasures and aircraft gun ammunition. "Ammo" is a diverse career field. Ammo Airmen can build bombs for just about any airframe in just about any deployed environment. Here, they provide munitions support for 45 F-16C/D Fighting Falcon aircraft and become familiar with the local regulations and technical orders. For these Ammo Airmen, supplying the weaponry is only part of the challenge; they also have to make sure the weapons are reliable. For them, there's no greater feeling than seeing aircraft return with an empty rack after a mission. View the slideshow.
