Living overseas, we meet new people and absorb different ideas and languages. Learning about the country we are living in is a great way to understand the culture and to get by.

There are many culture exchange programs and activities people can experience at Kadena Air Base to learn more about their new home.

A cultural exchange cooking class at the Kadena Town Rotary Plaza Oct. 5 was hosted by the Kadena Chamber of Commerce Women's Division and the 18th Wing Public Affairs community relations office. While cooking, the participants interacted by teaching and learning how to say the ingredients in Japanese and how the Japanese prepare particular dishes.

"Through cooking, both the American and Japanese participants had a cultural exchange and became one," said Keiko Toma, 18th Wing Public Affairs community relations specialist and event coordinator. "By re-creating the cultural dishes at home, hopefully the participants can share the cultural experience with their family and friends."
