Japan's foreign minister visits Kadena

KADENA AIR BASE, Japan --  Brig. Gen. Matthew H. Molloy, 18th Wing commander, welcomed Japan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Koichiro Genba, during his site visit to Kadena Air Base, Japan, Oct. 18.

During the meeting, the foreign minister extended his appreciation to Okinawa-based U.S. service members for working to ensure peace and stability.

The foreign minister asked that U.S. service members strive to reduce noise, accidents and incidents, and to continue to work with local towns on disaster preparedness and response.

General Molloy commented that importance of the Japan/U.S. partnership has never been greater

"Our U.S. and Japanese forces are integrating more everyday to insure interoperability," he said. "Okinawa is our home and we will strive to be the best neighbors we possibly can. We must be good stewards of the environment as well."

General Molloy also stated that if there is a natural disaster the U.S. service members will be there to help.

"If there is a tsunami on the way, our gates will be open immediately to get people to higher ground," he said.

The foreign minister wrapped up the visit and stated that because of the U.S. service members' efforts, many Japanese people realize the importance of the Japan/U.S. alliance.
