Kadena Airman named PACAF Airman of the Year Published April 17, 2012 By Staff Sgt. Darnell T. Cannady 18th Wing Kadena Air Base, Japan -- A member of the 18th Contracting Squadron was recently recognized by Pacific Air Force headquarters for superior performance in 2011. Senior Airman Jaime Compean III was selected as PACAF's Outstanding Airman of the Year in the Active Duty Airman category for 2011. The PACAF Outstanding Airmen of the Year awards recognize 12 of the command's outstanding enlisted personnel for superior leadership, job performance, community involvement and personal achievements. "I am absolutely beaming with pride over the accomplishments of this inspirational young leader and warrior," said Lt. Col. Phillip Hendrix, 18th CONS commander. "I want to echo Col Constantine's message to the 18 MSG: There have to be a lot of Airmen Airmen in PACAF, but we get to say that we work with the best airman in the Pacific Air Forces for 2011. I offer him my personal congratulations for highlighting the 18th CONS in such a fantastic manner." Compean is a contracting specialist who helped another flight execute its $13.5 million flight budget. As an Airman first class he was hand-picked to train new Airmen and officers about the Japanese local contracting process which varies from the stateside process. During the Okinawa First vendor fair he developed training packets and escorted local vendors onto base, leading to an increase in interest from local businesses. Additionally, he is an Air Force Sergeant's Association legislative committee member, Airman Against Drunk Driving vice president, youth soccer coach, flight physical training leader and a Senior Airman Below-The-Zone winner. "[He is] one of the best Airmen I have worked with in my entire career," said Master Sgt. Chad Obermiller, 18th CONS flight chief. "He is an inspiration to so many in the contracting community." Compean will now compete in the 12 Outstanding Airmen of the Year category for the U.S. Air Force. "Being able to represent the 18th CONS and Kadena Air Base makes me feel honored," said Compean. "Knowing my squadron noticed the hard work and nominated me for this award makes me proud to be part of this team."
