During the 15th annual Japan-America Air Force Goodwill Association, or JAAGA, award ceremony and reception at Naha Air Base, Japan, Feb. 1, one Air Force non-commissioned officer and one Japan Air Self Defense Force NCO were presented awards for their efforts to strengthen the bonds between the U.S. and Japan.

The awards were presented to Senior Master Sgt. Robert Miller, from the 718th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Kadena Air Base, and Master Sgt. Hisashi Saiki, from the Naha Air Rescue Squadron.

Miller implemented bilateral exchange programs at Kadena Air Base, spearheaded a bilateral training event, provided support for a "Kouku Jeitai" (Japan Air Self Defense Force) Air Staff visit with senior Japanese military officials, and planned Koku Jieitai air refueling support, providing two KC-135s for tactical operations training.

Saiki spearheaded the overall coordination for Exercise Cope Angel, enhancing the capabilities of rescue operations, and deepened friendships by planning exchange activities between the Koku Jieitai and U.S. Air Force military and family members.

"These types of bilateral engagements are extremely important and enhance camaraderie and esprit de corps between the U.S. Air Force and the Japan Air Self Defense Force," said Col. Brian McDaniel, 18th Wing vice commander. "They will pay huge dividends if we ever have to fly and fight together in the defense of Japan."

"We are indeed proud of Master Sergeant Saiki and Senior Master Sergeant Miller's contributions to our alliance; they bring great honor to our countries, our services, and to themselves," he said.

JAAGA was established by JASDF veterans in 1996. It aims to contribute to promoting friendship and mutual understanding between JASDF and the U.S. Air Force.
