U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sergeant Shaun Campbell, Fifth Air Force command chief, was recognized by Japan Air Self Defense Force Gen Takehiro Morita, chief of staff, on 10 April 2026 for his contributions to strengthening cooperation between Koku-Jieitai and the U.S. Air Force.

Chief Campbell received a certificate of appreciation and Japan Defense Cooperation Award 2nd Class for his contributions to strengthening cooperation between Koku-Jieitai (Japan Air Self-Defense Force) and USAF (the United States Air Force) through his profound insight and extensive expertise, since his appointment in June 2024 as Command Chief Master Sergeant of the 5th Air Force.

Notably, through his outstanding leadership, Campbell played a pivotal role in planning and successfully delivering the first Inter-Pacific Junior Enlisted Leader Forum ever hosted in Japan. By preparing Japanese-language materials and easing the English proficiency requirement, he enabled broader participation from Koku-Jieitai, thereby advancing the professional development of Koku-Jieitai noncommissioned officers in the course.

During his time at Fifth Air Force Campbell participated in Koku-Jieitai Senior Enlisted Advisor Training, delivering an insightful and detailed lecture providing and overview of Mission Ready Airman development and the challenges associated with developing airmen under the USAF Agile Combat Employment concept, contributing to enhanced mutual understanding and strengthening cooperation between Koku-Jieitai and USAF Senior Enlisted Advisor.

His work with the Koku-Jieitai enhanced interoperability and undeniably strengthened the partnership between Japan and U.S. Air Forces.

"Chief Master Sergeant Campbell's achievements, dedication, and passion will long be remembered as a cornerstone of the enduring friendship between Japan and the United States," said Morita. "I hereby express my sincerest gratitude for his dedication and commitment."
