Attendees at the Pacific Air Museum’s dedication of a Royal Australian Air Force Air F-111C listen attentively to Gen. Hawk Carlisle, commander of Pacific Air Forces, at Ford Island, Hawaii, Nov. 23, 2013. The attendees included veterans, business and civic leaders, and U.S. military leaders. The F-111 was a tactical bomber, flying hundreds of miles close to earth and under radar, hitting target, and them zooming up high and dashing home at supersonic speed-all without refueling. Australian forces have fought beside the U.S. and other allies in every significant conflict since World War I. The F-111C seen here from the Nov. 23 F-111 Dedication Ceremony at the Pacific Aviation Museum, was Australia’s principal strike aircraft from 1973 through 2010 and was affectionately known there as the Pig due to its ability to “hunt” at night with the nose of the aircraft close to the ground. With the United States Air Force it saw combat in Vietnam and participated in the bombing raids of Operation Desert Storm. The exterior is an exact livery of the paint scheme and markings as delivered from General Dynamics to the Royal Australian Air Force in 1973. The F-111C joins museum’s growing collection of 45+ historic aircraft. (U.S. Air Force photo/Tech Sgt. Jerome S. Tayborn/Released)
