1/12/2012 - BELLOWS AIR FORCE STATION, Hawaii -- Several unexploded ordnance and munitions were excavated here during a scheduled Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP) remedial investigation at a former World War II bomb range, Jan. 10 and 11.
The Air Force's primary concern remains the safety of Bellows AFS guests and employees. Teams have taken all necessary precautions to secure the ordnance site, which currently serves as the station's driving range. The area is closed pending further evaluation by the MMRP.
The location of the findings does not impact any other area of the Air Force station.
Local area residents and guests of Bellows should be aware that the ordnance has been evaluated by certified unexploded ordnance professionals and confirmed for detonation in place by certified Hawaii demolition contractors. Demolition operations will be conducted in a manner that minimizes impacts to surrounding habitat and wildlife.
