11/16/2011 - JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii -- The Waimānalo Annual Makahiki Youth Camping, Ceremonial and Competition Event will take place at Bellows Beach Park Friday through Sunday in Waimānalo.
Events will be held throughout each day and will include competition games, cultural presentations and camping for youths, recalling ancient Hawaiian traditions of peaceful gathering and friendly sportsmanship.
The Makahiki season was the ancient Hawaiian New Year festival that honored the Hawaiian god, Lono, the guardian of peace and health, as he transitions from Ku, a time of war and politics, to Lono, a time for relaxation and celebration. Makahiki was a holiday covering four lunar months, from approximately October or November to January or February.
According to legends, the appearance of the Pleiades star cluster, or Makali`i, symbolizes the place the first Hawaiian people came to Earth and with the star's appearance, marks the beginning of Makahiki. Makahiki is the traditional celebration of harvest, time of personal rest and spiritual and cultural renewal.
The Waimānalo Makahiki will be open to the public and admission and parking will be free. For more information regarding this event, visit www.hoolua.org and click on the Makahiki tab.
